“Now we are at the heart of the aesthetic matter. Nothing can show this value to you unless it is discovered in your own experience, in the persistent exercise of your own taste, and thence the willingness to challenge your taste as it stands, to form your own artistic conscience, hence nowhere but in the details of your encounter with specific works.”
—Stanley Cavell, The World Viewed
Standard Gauge may eventually become a regular newsletter. For now, it will be a space to host some very occasional film writing that, for whatever reason (length, format, or more often subject), is not viable elsewhere. I cannot promise that updates will be at all regular, but I can assure you that the pieces will be long, heavily researched, and utterly devoid of up-to-the-moment currency. There will also likely be references to Stanley Cavell.
